It IS Easy to Be Green
(continued)
I think we would all like to be greener than we are, but just what does that mean? If you are not a guru on the subject it can be somewhat overwhelming. Years ago we all thought that recycling our paper and aluminum cans meant we were really contributing to saving our environment. But not anymore. Green is mainstream and there are many options, choices and approaches to the matter. Green homes, cars, gifts, babies, gardening, cleaning and etc. So let's get started, below are some really simple tips and as part of my blog I'll be posting more on a regular basis. In an effort to compile these energy, money and time saving tips into one convenient location AND would love to get tips from you on how you have "gone green".
1. Change to a Compact Fluorescent Light Blub (CFLs). They use about 65% less energy and yes they cost a little more upfront, but remember, they burn 10 times longer.
2. Use eco-friendly cleaners. Cleaners that are toxic make their way into the groundwater so options such as 7th Generation clean just as well as others that use harsh chemicals.
3. Eat local, eat organic. My favorite. Eating local saves transporation fuel, eating organic keeps chemicals out of the soil. Besides, you should be supporting your local businesses in your community anyway.
4. The no brainer - RECYCLE, RECYCLE, RECYCLE!!
5. Stay Tuned. Bookmark this page for tips on being green and to find out what is going on in Memphis to help the environment. Also stay tuned to get information on recycling in your neighborhood.
Getting Ready for Cold Weather
(continued)
Roof and Gutters
Trim back all tree limbs and vegetation away from the roof. Remove debris, such as leaves and sticks from your gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters don't allow water to properly drain away from the home, this can cause leaks and or water damage to the interior.
Water Heater
Perform an annual inspection now, you don't want to find out your water heater isn't working properly in the dead of winter. Check the tank's pressure and temperature relief valve. Remove sediment from the bottom of the tank by draining two gallons of water to improve heat transfer and the efficiency of your heater.
Heating and Cooling
Check the exhaust if you have a forced warm-air heating system, also check the air shutter openings for dirt and dust. Clean lint and dirt from the blower blades, motor and burner (if you have a gas heater). Vacuum air passages and check and replace fan belts, if necessary.
Doors and Windows
To save money, make sure doors and windows are properly sealed. Replace weatherstripping around door bottoms and jambs and window frames. Check for loose or missing glazing putty and caulking for deterioration.
Water Pipes
Frozen or burst pipes can cause major damage to your home and be very expensive to repair. Add insulation, which reduces heat loss from hot-water pipes and condensation on cold water pipes. This can be done by wrapping the pipes with heating tape or blanket insulation and duct tape or by encasing the pipes with preformed plastic foam. Examine your pipes for cracks and leaks.
Fireplace
Before you light the logs make sure that your fireplace is in good working order. Clean the chimney flue and if needed inspected and repaired. Check the seal on your flue, which is designed to deep out drafts. Replace the seal if it is loose or damaged.
Remember, this is simply a guide. If you decide to do the fall maintenance yourself disconnect the power for any electrical or gas systems and always refer to your owner's manual for proper instructions, which should be the final authority on any maintenance.
I think you are not quite right and you should still studying the matter.

According to experts in the energy, environmental and green industries, even the smallest green home-improvement changes can yield lasting, long-term benefits. Many companies, municipalities and the federal government, offer incentives for people to make greener choices. Many green home-improvement ideas work for homeowners and people who lives in apartments and condominiums.
